Sweden Pelagic
The Resource Recovery Plant
The Residual Resource Factory (…or Sill-icon Valley) – from the ocean's resources to the innovation of the future
Imagine a place where the possibilities of the sea meet the power of entrepreneurship. Where ideas about sustainability and the circular economy are not just discussed – but become reality. That place is Ellös, and the driving force behind the vision is Sweden Pelagic.
An idea born of the sea
Several years ago, Professor Ingrid Undeland coined the term ”Sill-icon Valley” – a playful yet powerful vision of an innovation hub for the blue economy. The idea was simple yet groundbreaking: to create an environment where research, start-ups and small businesses can develop products that utilise marine resources in a sustainable way. Today, that vision is becoming a reality.
Why blue economies?
The sea is an untapped treasure chest. Side streams from the fishing industry and marine species that are currently underutilised can become raw materials for the food, health products and biotechnological solutions of the future. By creating a shared platform for innovation, we want to contribute to a more sustainable world – while at the same time opening the door to new business opportunities.
What do we offer?
In our hub in Ellös, we have converted a previously unused part of the factory into modern, food-grade premises. Here, companies can share resources that would otherwise have been costly to invest in:
Premises and equipment: Production areas, machinery and storage spaces.
Logistics and serviceTruck transporter, deep-water port and efficient transport solutions.
ExpertiseEverything from food processes and certifications to packaging, labelling, marketing and distribution.
This means that as an entrepreneur you can test your idea without having to build your own factory or employ a whole team. We offer a shortcut to innovation – and a secure environment where ideas can grow.
Strategic location
Ellös is the heart of our initiative. With a deep-water port right by the factory and developed logistics to Gothenburg, Kungshamn, Lysekil and other key locations, we are perfectly positioned to support blue industries.
Our vision
We dream of an ecosystem where small businesses, researchers and innovators collaborate to create the sustainable products of the future. A cluster that not only strengthens the Swedish blue economy – but puts West Sweden on the map as an international role model for circular solutions.
Funding and partnerships
The project has been made possible with support from the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund. Together with our partners, we are building a future where the ocean's resources are used more smartly, and where innovation becomes a natural part of everyday life.
